Veronica Roth werd geboren in 19 augustus 1988 in New York en is een Amerikaanse schrijfster, bekend van de Divergent trilogie. Roth studeerde creative writing aan de Nortwestern Universiteit. Tijdens haar studie begon ze met het schrijven van Divergent, nadat ze geïnspireerd raakte tijdens een van haar colleges. Inmiddels wijdt Roth haar leven volledig aan het schrijven van boeken en woont ze in de buurt van Chicago.
De Divergent trilogie bestaat uit drie boeken, Divergent, Insurgent en Allegiant (Inwijding, Opstand en Samensmelting) en een novella: Four: A Divergent Story Collection (Het verhaal van Four). Divergent speelt zich af in een futuristisch Chicago, waar de maatschappij opgedeeld is in vijf groepen, facties genaamd: Dauntless (Onverschrokkenheid), Abnegation (Zelfverloochening), Erudite (Eruditie), Amity (Vriendschap) en Candor (Oprechtheid). Divergent volgt Beatrice, die op zestien-jarige leeftijd een factie moet kiezen, maar erachter komt dat ze niet slechts in een van de facties op te delen uit. Ze is divergent (afwijkend), wat betekent dat ze eigenschappen van meerdere facties bezit. Dit blijkt al snel levensgevaarlijk te zijn.
De succesvolle trilogie wordt inmiddels ook verfilmd. De eerste film kwam in 2014 uit, de tweede in 2015. Het derde boek is opgedeeld in twee films: Allegiant (deel 1) en Ascendant (deel 2) die in respectievelijk 2016 en 2017 uitkomen.
